Basically, a standard asynchronous engine (AC engine) differs from an electronically committed engine (EC engine) by a much better efficiency. This is particularly evident in the partial load operation:

With the AC engine, only the voltage is reduced, while the frequency remains the same and the engine goes into the lossy slip.
The EC engine with electronic commutation, on the other hand, runs synchronously, so that no slip occurs and therefore no slip losses arise.
